Visual Motion and its Role in the Stabilization of Gaze

چکیده

Many studies on the visually guided orientation behavior of insects have revealed a wealth of fascinating mechanisms which enable these small animals to make their way with usually much less than one milligram of brain (see Chapter 11). However, only a few studies have been devoted to insect eye movements although it is clear that most insects can turn their head, and thus their eyes relative to the body. Since there is no review available on the subject, I will first briefly describe insect eyes and oculomotor systems, and then address stabilizing eye movements relative to the surroundings. I will mainly describe roll-stabilization, using the blowfly as an example (Hengstenberg, 1992), and mention common or distinctive features of other insects where advisable.

The effect of adding gaze direction recognition to stabilizing exercises on pain, muscular endurance and proprioception women with chronic non-specific neck pain

Aims and background: Gaze direction recognition is one of the new treatments method for neck pain. The positive effects of stabilization exercises in various studies on neck pain have also been confirmed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of adding a gaze direction recognition program to common stabilizing exercises on neck pain intensity, muscular endurance and pro...

Cross-modal influence of mechanosensory input on gaze responses to visual motion in Drosophila.

Animals typically combine inertial and visual information to stabilize their gaze against confounding self-generated visual motion, and to maintain a level gaze when the body is perturbed by external forces. In vertebrates, an inner ear vestibular system provides information about body rotations and accelerations, but gaze stabilization is less understood in insects, which lack a vestibular org...

Comparison of Stability Training with and without Positional Release Technique on the Pain, Neck Range of Motion in Men with Chronic Neck Pain

Introduction: Neck pain is the second common musculoskeletal disorder Clinical trial only by back pain. Despite the high prevalence of neck pain, its treatment is still a major challenge. Neck stabilizer training is a technique designed to improve the internal mechanisms of the spine which causes cervical spine stability and invulnerability. On the other hand, manual treatments are low-costly w...

sensory systems are weighted and at which stage the combination takes place is still under investigation. But it seems that, at least in the fly, such integration occurs quite early on in the visuo-motor pathways, which helps the animal to keep its gaze level and remain stable in the air during rapid movements but also when slowly drifting. What is the point in studying the ocelli and other ins...

Visual gaze control during peering flight manoeuvres in honeybees.

As animals travel through the environment, powerful reflexes help stabilize their gaze by actively maintaining head and eyes in a level orientation. Gaze stabilization reduces motion blur and prevents image rotations. It also assists in depth perception based on translational optic flow. Here we describe side-to-side flight manoeuvres in honeybees and investigate how the bees' gaze is stabilize...

Oculo-motor stabilization reflexes: integration of inertial and visual information

STABILIZATION OF GAZE IS A FUNDAMENTAL REQUIREMENT OF AN ACTIVE VISUAL SYSTEM FOR AT LEAST TWO REASONS: (i) to increase the robustness of dynamic visual measures during observer's motion; (ii) to provide a reference with respect to the environment ([Ballard and Brown, 1992]). The aim of this paper is to address the former issue by investigating the role of integration of visuo-inertial informat...
